Can I have an LCD Projector without a blank screen?

Any flat light coloured wall will work. That said, you might have to adjust the projector to compensate for the wall colour to get accurate colour … unless the wall is white or a neutral colour (e.g. light grey). In general the flatter and smoother the surface the better.

My first screen was a painted wall, although I used a custom paint blend I read about on the AVS Forum’s DIY Screen Section (see link). It worked great … but I couldn’t take it with me when I moved! Other options include laminate sheet, blackout cloth, and even a stretched sheet.

In general, commercial screens will work from slightly to significantly better than a DIY screen, but it’s quite possible to make or paint your own screen for <$100 that will rival a $1000 commercial model.

Some factors that impact on performance include colour accuracy and uniformity, gain, viewing angle, lack of visible texture, hot-spotting. A plain white wall for example will most likely have low gain, may have non-uniformity, and require compensation for accurate colour. BUT ... it will work.
